Find the right specialist\n\nAsk your oncologist who sees a lot of your cancer subtype. The [NCI cancer-center directory](https://www.cancer.gov/research/infrastructure/cancer-centers/find) is one starting point; some listed centers focus on laboratory research rather than patient care.\n\nAsk the clinic whether it sees your disease, offers second opinions, needs a referral and can review remotely. Check insurance and any self-pay review fee before scheduling.\n\n## 2. Send the packet before the visit\n\n1. Pathology and molecular-testing reports.\n2. Scan reports and the actual imaging files the clinic requests.\n3. A short treatment timeline and current medication list.\n4. Your oncologist’s current recommendation.\n5. Your three most important questions.\n\nConfirm the receiving clinic has the files. If it wants slides or tissue, have pathology arrange the transfer through its release process.\n\n## 3. Ask questions that change a decision\n\n1. Do you agree with the diagnosis and current plan? If not, why?\n2. Is any recommended testing missing?\n3. Are there trials or specialist options we should consider now?\n4. What would trigger a change in the plan?\n5. Can my local oncologist deliver the care while you advise?\n\n## 4. Close the loop\n\nGet the written recommendation and send it to your treating team. If opinions differ, ask each doctor to explain the reasoning and discuss the options together.\n\nAsk how quickly a decision is needed.
