SpeciCare helps patients keep their own tumor tissue from surgery or biopsy. You sign a document it calls a SpeciDirective, which states that you own the tissue and want it saved, and SpeciCare sends a kit for your care team to use. The goal is to have both live and fixed tissue ready for future testing, trials or personalized treatment.
What they offer
- A SpeciKit mailed ahead of your procedure.
- Storage of live and fixed tissue: cryopreserved dissociated cells, cryopreserved pieces of tissue and a paraffin (FFPE) block.
- A report from a board-certified pathologist.
- Consultations with a patient advocate, included with the service.
- Help transferring tissue when you need it.
How it works and what it costs
Contact SpeciCare before your procedure. Your surgeon and hospital pathology team still have to agree to collect and release the tissue. SpeciCare's pricing page lists storage at $69 a month by automatic payment, or 12 months for the price of 10, a $138 saving. That price covers up to 15 aliquots, with more at $5 each. It says insurance coverage varies (pricing page, checked October 23, 2026). Ask about any kit or processing fees, which the page does not list.
How it fits with other services here
My biopsy tissue guide covers what to ask your surgeon first. StoreMyTumor and Kernis Health offer similar storage. SpeciCare also publishes lung cancer clinical trial information on its site.
Questions I would ask
- What does my surgeon need to do, and what if my hospital says no?
- Are there kit, processing or shipping fees on top of storage?
- Which formats make sense for the tests or programs I'm considering?
- How do I transfer tissue to a lab or trial, and what does that cost?
- What happens to my tissue if I stop paying for storage?
